The Head of the Class Goes to the Heart of America

Located almost in the geographic center of the United States, Kansas City epitomizes American life in many ways. It was founded in 1839 at the juncture of the Missouri and Kansas Rivers as the Town of Kansas, named for the Kanza Indians. It served as the trailhead for three major routes west, becoming the largest cattle market in the nation. In 1853, it was incorporated as the City of Kansas and by 1897 had absorbed the older and larger community of Westport.

The city always had an air of wildness about it, and the 20th century found it rife with political corruption and criminal activity. This era was portrayed in Robert Altman's 1966 film "Kansas City." Happily for the movie's soundtrack, this period also found Kansas City a major center for jazz and blues, hosting such musical giants as Count Basie and Charlie Parker.

Today, Kansas City is still known for great entertainment with dozens of theatres, galleries, clubs and superb restaurants, including some of the best barbeque joints around. Besides several internationally acclaimed art and history museums, the city boasts more outdoor fountains than any other except Rome.

For the past 50 years, its amenities, central location and cosmopolitan population have attracted major corporations such as Hallmark, H&R Block, Sprint and Pony Express as well as new technology firms. This diverse economy, like Kansas City’s history and culture, reflects the independent, complex and innovative American spirit that's driven this country and this city to such success.
